En un importante paso hacia la reducción de los embarazos adolescentes no planificados en América Latina y el Caribe, se celebró una reunión regional en República Dominicana con la participación de ministros, autoridades locales, expertos y líderes juveniles. El objetivo principal de este encuentro fue desarrollar estrategias efectivas para abordar este desafío de salud pública en poblaciones vulnerables.
La reunión, organizada por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) en colaboración con el Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (Unicef) y el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas (UNFPA), contó con el apoyo del Gobierno de la República Dominicana y de Canadá. El evento fue liderado por el ministro de Salud, Víctor Atallah, y la primera dama de la República Dominicana, Raquel Arbaje.
Bajo el lema «Acelerando la reducción del embarazo adolescente en edades de 10 a 14 y de 15 a 19 años en poblaciones vulnerables en América Latina y el Caribe», el encuentro buscó establecer acuerdos sobre soluciones prácticas y enfoques para abordar el impacto negativo de los embarazos adolescentes en las trayectorias de vida de las jóvenes.
Víctor Atallah destacó la relevancia del evento para enfrentar una problemática crítica en la región, que afecta a las adolescentes y requiere un esfuerzo continuo para su erradicación. «Desde el Gobierno, a través del Gabinete de Niñez y Adolescencia liderado por la primera dama, se están implementando políticas estratégicas para prevenir el embarazo adolescente y combatir el matrimonio infantil», comentó Atallah. Además, señaló que, aunque se han logrado avances significativos, es crucial mantener el enfoque para continuar reduciendo la tasa de fecundidad.
Por su parte, la primera dama Raquel Arbaje resaltó que el encuentro está alineado con las metas nacionales de minimizar el embarazo adolescente. Informó que, hasta el primer trimestre de este año, las estadísticas muestran una disminución del 26.58% en los embarazos adolescentes comparado con el mismo período del año anterior. Este logro se atribuye a la implementación de la Política de Prevención y Atención a las Uniones Tempranas y el Embarazo en Adolescentes, presentada por el presidente Luis Abinader en noviembre de 2021.
